Production DBA part of team responsible for 24 x 7 support of 200
production and 400 development servers ranging in size from 500Mb
to 20Gb. The last 6 months were spent working on the Y2K project providing
information on compliant versions of the Sybase product range, organising
the implementation of upgrades and providing an isolated test environment
for application testing.

European/Asian sales and marketing database with a nightly feed from
a third party distribution system. Data was accessed via Powerbuilder
applications and reporting tools including Business Objects and Impromptu/Powerplay.
Responsibilities
Responsible for 8 Sybase production servers throughout Europe and
Asia and 2 development servers.
Up to 5 databases on each server, the largest being 10Gb. Tasks included:
- Design and QA of SQL for stored procedures, Powerbuilder applications,
Business Objects and Powerplay/Impromptu reporting tools.
- Installation of Sybase servers, upgrading of existing servers
from Sybase 10 to 11.
- Evaluation and selection of new DBA tools and database products
- Capacity planning and specification of servers for new projects
- Logical and Physical Data Modelling using S-Designer (V4).
- Configuration Control for database objects, providing written
procedures and coding standards
- Performance monitoring and tuning of all existing servers
- Backup and Recovery of databases and servers and other daily administration
tasks

Project description
European Marketing Information System consisting of a database holding
customer information with the following client applications: Customer
Registration/Enquiry, Market Segmentation, Campaign Management and
Sales Order Processing.
Responsibilities
Analyst/Programmer responsible for analysis through to implementation
of the system in nine European countries. Each country had a separate
database ranging in size from 100 Mb to 1Gb. Development involved
coding Visual Basic front end programs and Sybase stored procedures
on the Unix server. Implementation involved creation of each database,
data migration from existing systems, travel to each country to check
installation and provide user training.

Project Description.
The system collected data from Thames Water's control and monitoring
systems and inserted it into a single relational database. The client
was developed in ENFIN/3, which is a Smalltalk based GUI.
Responsibilities
My main task was the logical and physical design of the VAX Rdb database
that was being used to hold all the measurements along with the and
static works details. The database consisted of 120 Tables and 4 million
rows.

British Nuclear Fuels Limited - Real Time Process Control
System
June 1992 - September 1992
The manufacturing and control system part of the project involved
the use of SCADA machines to control and track the movement of fuel
rods along the fuel production line. Bespoke code written in VAX PASCAL.
Worked on the project as a designer using the YOURDON methodology.
Anglian Water - Operations Information System
Initially project roles included development, system testing and
telephone support of an Rdb/RALLY based system that kept details of
work carried out by sub contractors and produced a monthly invoice.
Following this I became increasingly involved in the analysis, design
and implementation of enhancements to the system, performance tuning
and monitoring of the production databases, technical supervision
of junior programmers.
